Every phone has a SIM (subscriber identity module) card. It is how your mobile carrier is able to connect you to the network. It holds a ton of your personal information - from apps you use to the logins for your accounts. Scammers have created a way to steal this information and use it to drain bank accounts and change logins. They play the long game - they will slowly collect personal information they find on the internet or through other scams and will call the network asking to switch your phone number to a new SIM card. You may think they couldn't possibly allow for someone to switch your phone number, but the scammers will use all the information they could find to impersonate you. once they have your phone number, they have access to texts, emails, passwords, etc. EVP, Madonna, shares a 2-part article that goes into detail about the process of SIM swapping and how you can prevent it.
