Danish Apple Bars
Ingredients:
- 2 3/4 c Flour (and a little extra for rolling out dough)
- 1 t Salt
- 1 c Butter – room temp
- 1 Egg – Yolk and White Separated
- 2/3 c Milk and 1 T Milk
- 5-6 Large Apples – peeled and sliced thin
- 1 c Crushed Corn Flake Crumbs
- 1 c Sugar
- 1 t Cinnamon
- 1 c Confections Sugar
- Ice Cream for Serving (optional)
Preheat oven to 400 degrees and grease / spray 9 x 13 pan.
Crust:
- Sift together flour and salt, add butter and mix until it resembles cornmeal.
- Slightly beat egg yolk in measuring cup and fill with milk until the 2/3 c line.
- Add slowly to your flour mixture to form dough. Mix only until combined, do not overmix.
- Divide Dough in half and roll out two section to each fit 9 x 13 pan on floured surface. Place half of rolled out dough in pan.
Assemble:
- Top bottom half of dough with corn flake crumbs.
- Arrange apple slices on top.
- Combine sugar with cinnamon and sprinkle on top of apples.
- Place the other half of rolled out dough on top.
- Pinch top layer to bottom layer.
Topping:
- Beat egg white slightly with a fork - brush over crust.
Bake at 400 for 55 – 60 minutes until lightly browned.
Glaze:
- Mix confections sugar and tablespoon of milk to make glaze, drizzle over warm bars. (may need to add a few drops of milk to desired consistency to drizzle)
Serve warm or cold, plain or with ice cream.
